THE STORY — WHERE IT CAME FROM

A teaching aid that got out of hand.

In 1974 a Hungarian professor of architecture wanted to show his students how a solid could rotate without falling apart. He built a wooden block of twenty-six smaller blocks held together by a hidden spindle, turned it a few times to admire the mechanism, and then spent the next month working out how to put the colours back. That month is the reason you are here.


1974Ernő Rubik builds the first working prototype in Budapest and takes about a month to solve it himself. He calls it the Magic Cube.
1977It goes on sale in Hungarian toy shops. Heavy, stiff, and an immediate local hit.
1980Licensed for the world market and renamed after its inventor. Roughly a hundred million are sold in three years.
1981A twelve-year-old publishes a solution booklet that becomes a bestseller. Cube fever is properly under way.
1982The first world championship, in Budapest. Minh Thai of the United States wins with 22.95 seconds — a time a determined beginner can now beat in a fortnight.
1990sThe fad dies. The cube quietly survives in maths departments, puzzle clubs and lofts.
2003Competitive solving is revived and standardised; the World Cube Association forms two years later. Times start falling and never stop.
2010A team using donated Google computing time proves that no scramble needs more than twenty moves to solve — "God's number".
NOWOver 350 million cubes sold, tens of thousands of competitors, and records that fall every few months.

Buy a modern cube

The original turns like a rusty hinge. A cheap current speed cube corner-cuts, self-aligns and costs less than a paperback — it will take ten seconds off your time before you learn anything.

Loosen it, lube it

Most cubes ship too tight. Half a turn looser on each screw and a drop of silicone lubricant transforms the feel. Too loose and it pops; find the middle.

Turn with fingers

Beginners rotate the whole cube with both hands. Fast solvers flick single faces with index fingers and thumbs while the cube stays still. Practise the flick before practising speed.

Never force it

If a face will not turn, another layer is misaligned by a fraction. Straighten it rather than pushing — that is how corners get chewed and cubes get popped.

Learn to look ahead

The clock runs while you search. Solving slowly but continuously beats solving fast in bursts, every time.

Colour scheme is standard

Almost every modern cube has white opposite yellow with green, red, blue and orange around the middle. Learn that layout once and any cube is familiar.

Not a layer — just nine squares of one colour on top. It teaches you to look at pieces rather than stickers, and almost everyone works it out unaided.

Follow the handbook once with it open, then again with it closed. Getting through unaided is the moment the puzzle stops being a puzzle.

Make a pattern on purpose

Run the moves below on a solved cube. A checkerboard, then the famous cube-within-a-cube. Undo each by reversing the sequence — good practice in reading notation cold.

Solve twenty cubes in a row without looking anything up, timing each. Watch the numbers fall on their own. That plateau is where people start learning proper methods.
